Help and Hints
To access information about honours awardees there are three search options:
Simple search
The simple search allows you to enter the name of an honours recipient and view details about the honours recipient’s award/s. You can also enter words that describe an award or select an Honours Announcement to view list of awardees for the particular Announcement.
- If you know the identity of an Australian honours recipient, enter their last name and first given name/s in the ‘Simple Search” option.
- If you are not sure of whether a person has been granted an award, a selection can be made for a particular honours announcement without entering the identity of a recipient i.e. Australia Day 2006 or other announcements listed. You can view the Calendar of Award events which provides dates of Honours Announcements.
- Keywords can be entered at “Award/Medal” option about words that might describe the type of award such as the word “bravery” which could refer to the medal type i.e. Bravery Medal, Star of Courage or other Bravery decorations.
- If you are having difficulties with this search option and are unable to find the desired information, you can select the “Advanced Search” option under the “Search Help” section on the right hand side of the “Simple Search” screen.
Viewing Simple search lists
- Once you have selected “search” a list will appear identifying the honours awardee, the award, date of award, in some cases an address or part address and postcode will be provided.
- If you hold your cursor above the awardee’s name and click, you will enter another level of information about their award details and in some cases if provided, a citation explaining the purpose for the award having been granted to the awardee will appear. Citations may not be available for all award types. If a person has more than one award their names will appear against each award held.
You can also select the “Show all Fields” box located on the right side of the screen to show full details of all honours recipients appearing in the list.
Printing Simple search lists
To print the list of honours recipients you are viewing as a result of your search option chosen, the following applies:
- The default number of honours recipient records appearing on each page is 10 records
- If there are more than 10 records you can view up to 25 records per page and print the 25 records or you can view all records and print all records with the single print request.
Advanced Search
The Advanced search option allows access to information about honours awardees through a number of fields and combination of fields i.e. Award/Medal type, Honours Announcements, State/territory/s, suburbs, postcodes and citation keywords.
This search option also allows you to search for information of honours recipients whose details are not necessarily published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette through Honours Announcements. You can view the Calendar of Award events which provides dates of Honours Announcements.
- If you know the identity of an honours awardee, enter the name details and select “Search”.
- You may wish to also select an award type under the selection “Award/Medal”. There are many medals in this search option inclusive of Imperial awards and Australian awards created since 1975 following the creation of the Australian system of honours and awards.
To enable you to select multiple awards from the list, select the first award then hold down the “Control” key when selecting further awards you wish to view. Once awards have been selected, release the “Control” button then select the “Search” button.
- You can add to your proposed search by going to the “Announcement” section and select an honours announcement i.e. “Australia Day 2006”. If you choose an award in the Order of Australia i.e. the “Medal of the Order of Australia” under the search option “Award/Medal” you would access a list of all of the awards of the Medal of the Order of Australia from the “Australia Day 2006” honours list.
- If you decide to enter one or more states/territories, suburbs or postcodes then separate them with commas.
- When entering keywords under “Citations” separate them with commas. Citations provide a description as to why a person was awarded an honour i.e “In recognition for service to the community, the Salvation Army and Meals-on-Wheels”. They are an open field and do not usea controlled vocabulary and so contain a wide range of terms and varying depths of details. You may wish to enter words i.e. research, medical, health, architecture, cricket, etc..
Please note: when using the “Advanced Search” option, when the words “Anonymous, Anonymous” appears in a list of awardees for a particular award, the awardee has requested their details do not appear on the website, however, their award is included in the tally for statistical purposes.
