Announcing and Presenting Awards
Award announcements
Awards in the Australian system of honours are announced at various times of the year:
- Australia Day (26 January)
- The Queen's Birthday (June)
- Midwinter's Day (June)
- Australian Bravery Decorations announcements in April and August
You can check on the Awards and Symbols calendar , which lists major awards and when they are announced.
Award ceremonies
Recipients of some awards in the Australian honours system are invited to receive the insignia of their awards at investiture ceremonies.
The Governor-General, state Governors and the Administrator of the Northern Territory conduct the ceremonies. If appropriate, Australian ambassadors and high commissioners carry out ceremonies overseas.
The ceremonies typically take place in April/May and September/October each year. They are held at Government House in Canberra and in each state and Territory capital.
Occasionally, special ceremonies are held. A recent example is the investiture ceremony for award recipients honoured for their bravery or outstanding service after the 2002 Bali Bombings .
Gazettal process
Honours announcements are published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette. The Gazette notices are available for a period of time on this website from the date of the honours announcement.
The complete list of honours recipients as printed in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette is published on the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department website on each occasion.
The version of the Australian Honours List on this website only contains the identities of those awardees who have agreed to have their details published.
