The story of Australia’s symbols is rich and colourful. Our symbols represent what is unique about the nation, reflecting different aspects of our cultural life and history.

Among our best-loved symbols are the national flag featuring the stars of the Southern Cross, the Union Jack and Commonwealth or Federation Star; our other Australian Flags, the Australian Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag our floral emblem, the fragrant golden wattle; the celebratory national colours of green and gold and our vibrant gemstone, the Australian opal. The Australian National Anthem is also one of our most important national symbols.

Did you know, for example, that in 1977 three million Australians voted in a referendum for Advance Australia Fair to become our national anthem (the choice of 43 per cent of voters) and that it was officially proclaimed in 1984?

The Commonwealth Coat of Arms is the formal symbol of the Commonwealth of Australia that signifies Commonwealth authority and ownership.

The Commonwealth Coat of Arms is used by Australian Government departments and agencies, statutory and non-statutory authorities, the Parliament and Commonwealth courts and tribunals.
